You are a legendary hacker drawn back into the digital underworld after years away. The Mainframe—the central hub controlling all corporate data—has been lost, and only you possess the skills to infiltrate the servers of the world's most powerful megacorporations and reclaim it. 868-BACK is a turn-based strategy roguelike that treats computer servers as hostile dungeons to be conquered, one grid-based floor at a time.

The core gameplay loop centers on tactical decision-making within tight 6x6 grids. You navigate procedurally generated server layouts, siphoning valuable data while avoiding anti-virus programs and security measures. Every move counts: spawning enemies, collecting power-ups, and managing limited resources create constant risk-reward tensions. The game's deceptive simplicity masks profound strategic depth—what appears as a Minesweeper-like puzzle evolves into a complex system of interlocking mechanics and cascading consequences.

Your primary tools are 'progs'—modular hacking abilities that can be chained together to create powerful combos. These stolen software tools form the foundation of your arsenal, but obtaining them requires careful positioning and resource management. Progs are scattered across dangerous server locations, forcing you to weigh the benefit of new abilities against immediate survival threats. Each run introduces unique server modifiers that fundamentally alter how you approach the grid, from dimensional shifts to corrupted code that undermines your agency.

Unlike its predecessor, 868-BACK introduces a meta-layer of strategic navigation. You now map out paths between multiple servers, choosing which corporate systems to target and in what order. Higher-difficulty servers grant score multipliers but stack increasingly punishing modifiers against you. This expanded structure transforms individual server runs into part of a larger campaign, where tactical choices compound across the entire mission.

868-BACK is designed for players who thrive on systems-heavy gameplay and high-difficulty roguelikes. The game includes refined accessibility features—a comprehensive tutorial and in-game index system—that demystify mechanics without sacrificing challenge. Expect brutal difficulty, permadeath, and the satisfaction of mastering a game that constantly reveals new layers of possibility through repeated play.
