On 3 November it emerged that the Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. The timing suits anyone curious about the older games: since 2 November Steam has had Borderlands games and bundles discounted by up to 90%, and no end date has been given for the sale.
If you want to go back to where it started on PC, there are a few ways to do it, and they don't cost the same. We checked each one this morning.
The first three games for about ten euros
Bought as separate Steam Keys, the first Borderlands GOTY, Borderlands 2 GOTY and The Pre-Sequel come to €8.23 (€10.26 with fees). That gets you the first two with their DLC and the Pre-Sequel without, for less than the Handsome Collection costs on its own right now.
The original: GOTY Edition below its usual price
The Game of the Year Edition of the first Borderlands, which bundles the base game with its DLC, is €3.61 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€4.49 with fees) at Gamivo, as a Steam Key. Its historical median is €4.50 (no fees), so today it sits 20% under what it normally costs. Of the packs we looked at, this is the one furthest below its usual level.
All the shops are on the page to buy Borderlands GOTY Edition key.
Borderlands 2: base game or GOTY
The base game is €2.28 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.38 with fees) at Difmark, Steam Key, against a median of €2.73 (no fees). The GOTY Edition is €3.20 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€4.06 with fees) at Gamivo, also a Steam Key, which is about its normal level (median €3.35, no fees). That's €1.68 more with fees for the DLC. If you plan to play it properly, we'd take the GOTY.
The Pre-Sequel costs less than in the Steam sale
With the sale, Steam is asking €3.99 (no fees). The cheapest Steam Key is at G2A for €1.42 (€1.71 with fees). We've only been tracking this page for six days, so we can't tell you whether it has been cheaper before. Steam users rate it Mostly Positive: 25,180 of 31,873 reviews, or 79%.
Handsome Collection: wait for it to drop
This pack has Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel with their DLC. The cheapest Steam Key is €10.14 with coupon GCKG2AP3R9D (€10.43 with fees) at G2A, 31% above its €7.75 median (no fees). Between April and September the monthly lows were €6.75 to €8.06 (no fees, in a series that mixes formats). Right now it costs more than all three older games bought separately. Buying BL2 GOTY and The Pre-Sequel on their own comes to €5.77 with fees, though that way you miss the Pre-Sequel DLC.
There's also a Steam Account at Key4Games for €5.74 with coupon GOCDKEYS16 (€6.21 with fees). That gets you access to someone else's Steam account: you can play, but the game is never registered to you. We'd stick to the key and set a price alert for when it falls back.
For the newer games, we've covered which Borderlands 3 edition to buy on PC and which Borderlands 4 edition makes sense.
