Tomb Raider fuses traversal, puzzle-box tombs, and tense combat across globetrotting expeditions. After defining the genre in 1996 —and expanding with Tomb Raider II (1997) and III (1998)— Crystal Dynamics refreshed movement and storytelling with Legend (2006), the tribute remake Anniversary (2007), and Underworld (2008). The 2013 reboot emphasized survival and systems-driven exploration, followed by the larger hubs of Rise (2015) and the dense, challenge-rich Shadow (2018). In 2024, Tomb Raider I–III Remastered preserves the vintage feel with quality-of-life updates.
On Xbox, Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) is a superb starting point. It balances open-ended hubs, optional tombs with clever physics, and polished stealth-combat, while offering enough backstory for newcomers. From there, finish the arc with Shadow (2018), or jump back to Tomb Raider (2013) to see the origin. For a historical primer, the 2024 remastered collection lets you experience the bedrock of the series’ level design before tackling the modern trilogy on Xbox.
