Quick verdict

Psychonauts 2 looks best on PC by a fine margin, but the complete console package is Xbox Series X: 2160p at 60fps, HDR and VRR.

Best graphics experience PC better anisotropic filtering and longer draw distance
Best console experience Xbox Series X 2160p at 60fps or 1440p at 120, with HDR and VRR
Best for the money PC the cheapest key for this game sits on PC

What PC brings

Graphics settings are close to identical across platforms, so the gap is in the fine detail: PC improves anisotropic filtering and draw distance on ambient occlusion and some shadows. It also supports VRR, which on console is limited to Series X and Series S.

Xbox Series leads on console

Series X lets you pick between 2160p at 60fps and 1440p at 120, and Series S between 1620p at 60 and 1080p at 120. HDR is exclusive to those two consoles, and their loading times are the best optimised of any version.

PlayStation is stuck at 30fps

PS4 runs at 1080p and PS4 Pro at 1440p, both at 30fps and both dropping frames more often when changing areas. There is no native PS5 version: what runs there is the PS4 Pro build unlocked to 60fps, and even then there is no HDR.

One missed opportunity

Xbox One X and PS4 Pro had the headroom for a 60fps mode that never arrived. The game still plays perfectly well at 30.

Frequently asked questions about Psychonauts 2

Which platform does Psychonauts 2 look best on?

PC, but not by much: the settings are very similar everywhere and the edge comes from anisotropic filtering and the draw distance on ambient occlusion and some shadows. On console, Xbox Series X is the best.

Does it run at 60fps on console?

Only on Xbox Series X and Series S, which also offer a 120fps mode. On PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X the game runs at 30fps.

Is there a PS5 version?

Not a native one. On PS5 it runs the PS4 Pro build at 1440p with the frame rate unlocked to 60. That is the smoothest way to play it on PlayStation, but without HDR or VRR.

Which consoles have HDR?

Only Xbox Series X and Series S. According to the analysis there is no HDR on PC, PS4 or PS4 Pro.

How does it run on Xbox Series S?

Well: 1620p at 60fps or 1080p at 120, with the same HDR and VRR as Series X. The gap between the two is resolution, not features.

Does it load quickly?

On Xbox it does, on both generations: the analysis points out that loading times are better optimised there than on PlayStation.
