Among consoles, Layers of Fear looks best on PS5, and performance mode is the one to pick.
PS5 and Series X share the same modes and resolution targets, but PS5 holds a higher average resolution in both. In the measured area of the final chapter it averages 1332p in performance mode against 1188p on Series X, and that shows up as sharpness.
Quality mode adds ray tracing and pushes resolution higher, but it caps at 30 FPS and stutters on both PS5 and Series X. Performance mode drops ray tracing and a little lighting quality, and gives you a solid 60 FPS instead. That is what the analysis recommends.
Series S has a single mode, 1440p reconstructed from dynamic 1080p at 60 FPS. It goes without ray tracing and trims shadows, global illumination, geometry and some post-processing, but it holds 60 FPS as well as the bigger machines.
⚠ Quality mode, the 30 FPS one, stutters on both PS5 and Series X: the analysis itself points you to performance mode.

Resolution, modes and FPS come from the video analyses above. The rest is published by each platform's official store and by the game's technical sheet on PC. Where nobody publishes the figure we put a dash, not a guess.

PS5. It shares its modes with Xbox Series X but holds a higher average resolution in both: in the measured area of the final chapter it averages 1332p in performance mode against 1188p on Series X.
Performance. It gives a steady 60 FPS at 2160p reconstructed from dynamic 1440p, while quality mode caps at 30 FPS and stutters on PS5 and Series X. The trade-off is losing ray tracing and a little lighting quality.
Yes, if 60 FPS at 1440p reconstructed from dynamic 1080p works for you. It is the only version without ray tracing and it trims shadows, global illumination, geometry and some post-processing, but the frame rate holds just as well.
It only appears in quality mode on PS5 and Series X, alongside higher resolution and better lighting. It is the clearest visual difference between the two modes, though it leaves you on half the frames.
The analysis could not measure PC performance because of technical issues unrelated to the game, but it confirms the game runs at 4K on maximum settings above 60 FPS on any RTX 40 series card.
