Quick verdict

Final Fantasy XVI looks best on PC, but on PS5 the real call is which mode you pick.

Best graphics experience PC 4K, 120 FPS and four different upscalers
Best console experience PS5 two modes and loading under 8 seconds
Best for the money PS5 2160p in quality mode without touching a single setting

Why PC wins

It is the only version with free settings, 4K, 120 FPS and the full upscaling set: DLSS 3.5, FSR 1.0, FSR 3.1 and XeSS 1.3, plus frame generation from NVIDIA and AMD. There is no ray tracing on any platform, so the gain is all resolution and smoothness. In our own measurements on the top preset, an RTX 4090 runs between 113 and 128 FPS.

On PS5

There are two modes. Quality gives 2160p at 30 FPS reconstructed from dynamic 1440p, raising shadows, filtering and render resolution; performance drops to 1440p from 1080p to reach 60 FPS. The catch is that it does not hold them even with patch 1.000.002: busy areas fall below 40.

On Xbox

The Xbox version arrived two years later and no technical analysis has measured it. The store listing confirms HDR, VRR, cloud saves and current-generation optimisation, but we have no resolution or frame rate figures of our own.

PS5's performance mode does not hold 60 FPS: it falls below 40 in the busiest areas, and patch 1.000.002 did not fix it.

Final Fantasy XVI on PS5: quality versus performance in the final build

  • Quality mode delivers 2160p at 30 FPS, reconstructed from dynamic 1440p; performance mode gives 1440p at 60 FPS from 1080p.
  • Quality mode raises render resolution, shadow quality, anisotropic filtering and, slightly, post-processing effects such as godrays.
  • In the more detailed cities, quality mode resolution can fall as low as 1080p.
  • With patch 1.000.002, performance mode still drops below 40 FPS in some areas, with no appreciable improvement over the demo.
  • Loading is extremely fast: you can boot the game and load a save in under 8 seconds from the console menu.
  • Cutscenes run at 30 FPS in quality mode.
  • He praises the Creative Business Unit III engine for its art direction, but places it below Luminous Engine or Unreal Engine 4 on lighting, geometry and physics.

Final Fantasy XVI on PS5: both graphics modes in the demo

  • The demo already had the final two modes: quality at 2160p/30 upscaled from 1440p, performance at 1440p/60 upscaled from 1080p.
  • Quality mode raises resolution, shadows, anisotropic filtering and some post-processing such as godrays.
  • Performance mode struggled to hold 60 FPS and dropped to 40 under heavy load.
  • Loading times are practically non-existent.
  • Cutscenes are locked to 30 FPS in both display modes.
  • He notes the figures come from the demo and that the final release could differ.

Frequently asked questions about Final Fantasy XVI

Which platform does Final Fantasy XVI look best on?

PC. It is the only one with free settings, 4K, 120 FPS and support for DLSS 3.5, FSR 1.0, FSR 3.1 and XeSS 1.3, plus frame generation. The game uses no ray tracing on any version.

Quality or performance mode on PS5?

Quality gives 2160p at 30 FPS reconstructed from dynamic 1440p, with better shadows and anisotropic filtering. Performance aims for 60 FPS at 1440p from 1080p, but does not hold them: the busiest areas fall below 40 FPS.

Did patches fix the performance?

With patch 1.000.002, performance mode was still dropping below 40 FPS in places, with no appreciable improvement over the demo. Quality mode resolution can also fall to 1080p in the more detailed cities.

What graphics card do I need on PC?

We have measured 30 cards on the top preset: an RTX 4090 runs between 113 and 128 FPS, an RX 7900 XTX between 102 and 116, and an RTX 4070 Ti SUPER between 88 and 98.

What is the Xbox version like?

It came out much later and no technical analysis has measured it, so we publish no figures. The Xbox listing does confirm HDR, VRR, cloud saves and current-generation optimisation.

How long does it take to load?

Barely any time. On PS5 you can boot the game and load your save in under 8 seconds from the console menu.
