Quick verdict

Dead Space Remake looks best on PC, and on console Xbox Series X sidesteps the variable rate shading problem PS5 had.

Best graphics experience PC ray tracing, DLSS 2.5 or FSR 2.1 and better textures and volumetrics
Best console experience Xbox Series X same modes as PS5, fewer VRS artefacts and faster loading
Best for the money PC the platform with the most offers competing in our comparison

Why PC wins

PC improves textures, anisotropic filtering, shadows and volumetric effects, and adds ray tracing, HDR, ultrawide and upscaling through DLSS 2.5 or FSR 2.1. It also has headroom to spare: of the 29 cards we measured on Ultra, an RTX 3080 Ti sits between 135 and 159 FPS.

On console

PS5 and Series X share the same two modes, with ray tracing only in quality. The split came from variable rate shading: PS5 applied it more aggressively and its artefacts showed more, until Motive removed it in a patch. Loading was also slightly quicker on Xbox.

If you play on Series S

Series S gets a single mode at a dynamic 1440p, no ray tracing, and cuts to lighting, textures and shadows.

No version ray traces reflections or shadows: it only sharpens ambient occlusion on a few elements.

Dead Space Remake on PS5, Xbox Series and PC: graphics comparison

  • PS5 and Series X get a quality mode at 1440p and 30 FPS with ray tracing, and a performance mode at a dynamic 2048x1080 without it.
  • Series S is left with a single mode, at a dynamic 1440p, no ray tracing and cuts to lighting, textures and shadows.
  • Quality mode raises volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion, shadows and some post-processing, but the change is hard to spot.
  • PC ray tracing and the console quality modes add more accurate ambient occlusion on certain elements; reflections and shadows use no ray tracing in any version.
  • PC improves textures, anisotropic filtering, shadows and volumetric effects, though the consoles match the high preset.
  • PS5 uses more aggressive variable rate shading than Series X, and its artefacts are more noticeable.
  • PS5 loads slightly slower than the Xbox Series consoles, although the monorail rides last just as long.
  • He rates the lighting and sound systems among the best he has seen: there is virtually no baked lighting, and that is very demanding.

The patch that removes VRS from Dead Space Remake, tested on PS5 and PC

  • Motive patched the Frostbite engine to remove variable rate shading on PS5 and turn it into an option on PC.
  • He compares the launch build with the patched one on PS5, PC, Series X and Series S.
  • He explains the difference between tier 1 and tier 2 VRS and where the image quality problem sits.
  • He measures what VRS gains in performance against what it costs in image quality, on PS5 and PC.
  • He closes by judging whether it was worth implementing here at all.

Frequently asked questions about Dead Space Remake

Which platform does Dead Space Remake look best on?

PC. It improves textures, anisotropic filtering, shadows and volumetric effects, and adds ray tracing and upscaling. The consoles land around the high preset on PC.

What graphics modes does it have on console?

PS5 and Xbox Series X get two: quality at 1440p and 30 FPS with ray tracing, and performance at a dynamic 2048x1080 without it. Series S only has one, at a dynamic 1440p and no ray tracing.

Is quality mode worth it?

Not really. It raises volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion, shadows and some post-processing, but the difference is hard to see. In exchange you drop from 60 to 30 FPS.

What was the variable rate shading issue on PS5?

PS5 applied it more aggressively than Series X and its artefacts were more noticeable. Motive patched the engine to remove it on PS5 and leave it as an option on PC.

What graphics card do I need on PC?

We have measured 29 cards on the Ultra preset. An RTX 4090 gives 251 to 291 FPS, an RX 7900 XTX 191 to 233, an RTX 4080 185 to 206 and an RTX 4070 Ti 133 to 156.
