Age of Wonders 4 got a new expansion on 3 November. The Silver Seas, published by Paradox, takes Triumph Studios' fantasy strategy game to sea with a pirate theme: two new forms, four tomes, a pirate dwelling and a batch of aquatic events.
The first of three expansions in Expansion Pass 4
The Silver Seas is the opening act of Expansion Pass 4, which went on sale on 1 October at a recommended price of €49.99. The pass unlocks the Singer of Storms pack straight away, then The Silver Seas, Court of the Archfey in the first quarter of next year and Forge of the Firstborn in the second quarter. The base game is sold separately.
We haven't been able to confirm what The Silver Seas costs on its own, so we won't give a figure. Neither the expansion nor Expansion Pass 4 is in our comparator yet, which means we have no key-store prices for them.
The base game, below its usual price
On Steam, Age of Wonders 4 is rated Very Positive: 13,886 of 17,143 reviews are positive, around 81%. Steam charges €19.99 (no fees). This morning the cheapest offer was a Steam Key at Gamivo for €13.42 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€14.88 with fees).
For this game, that's a good price. The key's historical median is €16.41 and the lowest we've seen was €8.03 on 27 October (both without fees). In 556 days of tracking it has only been cheaper on 7.
What the earlier passes cost
All three older passes are in the comparator as Steam Keys:
- Expansion Pass: €35.99 (no fees), sold by Steam itself and cheaper than any reseller right now. It covers the Archmage's Attire outfits, Dragon Dawn, Empires and Ashes, Primal Fury and Eldritch Realms.
- Expansion Pass 2: €38.21 at Eneba with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€42.05 with fees). Herald of Glory, Ways of War, Giant Kings and Archon Prophecy.
- Expansion Pass 3: €27.45 at K4G with the coupon GCDK14DEAL (€30.18 with fees), below its usual €33.49 (no fees).
The game plus all three comes to €123.10 with fees. Some expansions are also sold individually: Eldritch Realms is €9.31 at Gamivo with GCDKGamivo (€10.63 with fees), and Ways of War €8.32 at Difmark Digital Keys with the coupon Gocdkeys (€8.69 with fees), both as Steam Keys.
Our pick for a new player
Buy the base game first. At €14.88 with fees it's the cheapest way in, and there's a lot to play before any expansion makes a difference. Picking up the three old passes as well means spending more than seven times that on content you may not reach for months.
If you already know the game is for you and the pirate setting appeals, Expansion Pass 4 is the one that keeps adding content: base plus pass at the recommended price works out to €64.87. We'd still wait until it shows up in key stores so there's something to compare. For the older content, one standalone expansion is a cheaper test than a full pass.
If the base game is still more than you want to pay, set a price alert and we'll email you when it drops. All offers are on the page to buy Age of Wonders 4 key.
