You Are Empty: Absolute Edition is set in an alternate-history Soviet Union where a large-scale experiment intended to ensure the global victory of communism goes wrong, turning most of the population into insane mutants. The protagonist wakes up in a ruined hospital inhabited solely by these mutants and must fight to survive and unravel the mystery behind the disaster.

The game features basic first-person shooter gameplay as the player traverses a series of maps set in specific Soviet locations, such as a massive, ruined metropolis. Explore surreal locations across an alternate history Soviet Union, including collective farms, the Metro, an opera house, city rooftops, and secret laboratories. Use an arsenal of classic weapons, including the C96 Broomhandle pistol, PPSh submachine gun, Mosin rifle, double barrel shotgun, Molotov cocktails, and experimental retrofuturistic weaponry. The gameplay is mainly action-based, with a few minor puzzles that involve switches and keys, and the level path is entirely linear.

The 2026 Absolute Edition includes bug fixes, controller support, ultrawidescreen resolution support, and quality-of-life improvements such as expanded options and a toggle for sprinting. General improvements include achievements, controller support for modern and legacy controllers with 3 presets, fixed countless rendering bugs and crashes, and improved loading times by approximately 800%. Engine upgrades feature adjustable player FOV, an optional FPS limiter setting, up to 8x MSAA and 16x Anisotropic Filtering, consistent frametimes, fixed camera jittering, and improved windowed mode.

The game uses the in-house developed DS2 engine with an interactive and physics-based environment for both items and characters, featuring both indoor and outdoor environments including villages, factories, large cities, underground passages, a subway, a canyon, an opera house, and rooftop levels. Distinctive, grotesque enemies are inspired by Soviet themes. This remaster targets players seeking atmospheric, retro-inspired FPS experiences with a unique Cold War aesthetic and challenging combat in a richly detailed alternate history setting.
