Step into the ancestral halls of Castle Heterodyne as Agatha Clay, the Lost Heir to a mad family of genius inventors. This action-adventure game draws from the award-winning gaslamp fantasy graphic novel series by Phil & Kaja Foglio, delivering a Metroidvania-style exploration experience set within a sprawling, hazard-filled fortress. You must navigate hostile hallways, catacombs, and kitchens while confronting a corrupted AI that controls the castle's deadly traps and mechanisms.

Gameplay revolves around a core loop of exploration, tool crafting, and puzzle-solving. At your Workbench, you'll construct specialized gadgets like the Grapple Gun and Wrencherang to overcome environmental obstacles and unlock new areas. Your trusty Dingbot companion can squeeze into tight spaces and operate machinery, extending your reach throughout the castle. As you progress, you'll gain command over the castle itself, allowing you to trigger traps against enemies and activate mechanisms for creative spatial puzzle solutions.

Combat is deliberately secondary to exploration and problem-solving. Rather than pure action sequences, encounters are framed as puzzles to solve—you can engage foes with melee combat or explosive gadgets, but environmental manipulation and tool usage often prove more effective. The game rewards observation and creative thinking over reflexes.

What sets this title apart is its deep integration with the source material. The game includes the full Girl Genius graphic novels viewable in-game, and features encounters with beloved series characters including Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, Tarvek Sturmvoraus, and the enigmatic Zola Heterodyne. Your primary antagonist is Zola, a rival claimant to the Heterodyne throne who forces you to reclaim and repair your ancestral home before she does.

This game is tailored for fans of the Girl Genius comics seeking to experience the Castle Heterodyne storyline in interactive form, as well as players who enjoy exploration-heavy adventures with puzzle-focused gameplay. Those new to the series will find the in-game lore summaries helpful, though familiarity with the comics enriches the narrative experience significantly.
