What do our users think of A Hat in Time for PC Digital?
A Hat in Time is one charming romp through that little known realm of the 3D platformer. The player assumes the role of a little space-traveling girl stepping into vibrant worlds-aesthetic time with great controls. Funny, memorable characters, each chapter with its own curve-ball on classic platforming: Noir detective spoof? Yes. Horror spoof? It's there too. Just pure fun nostalgia with a bit of modern refinement.
Of all games I've played in recent years, A Hat in Time has to be one of my absolute favourites. A Hat in Time is a quirky, colourful, creative and super fun experience. You take control of a small girl [dubbed Hat Kid/Hat Girl] and wander your way through four very diverse and interesting worlds, each with their own unique set of interesting characters and themes. When playing the game, you may notice that it feels quite similar to games like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and [released before] Super Mario Odyssey. In my personal opinion, I feel that A Hat in Time takes the core gameplay of those games and expands on them. Hat Kid feels more fun to control than Mario in these games despite feeling very similar. Hat Kid shares some of Mario's moves. Jumping and diving being the most notable. If you played any of these games, you will be pleasantly surprised with how comfortable and well executed the control scheme is. On top of that, you have 5 extra hats you can construct out of yarn to give Hat Kid new powers on your journey. Your nostalgia senses will definitely tingle if you enjoyed those games too, especially considering how levels are constructed. As you explore these four worlds, your main goal are to collect these hourglasses called Time Pieces. Time Pieces are scattered throughout each world, but different time pieces can be obtained through each level. For example, in Subcon Forest, you can go down the normal path and burn the paintings in the first objective, or you can let your curiosity lead you to the snowy area of the map and into Queen Vanessa's Manor. Once you get past the frightening Queen, you will be rewarded with a Time Piece. I was ecstatic to see that! It brought back memories of Super Mario 64, back to a happier time. Trust me when I say that no two levels feel the same. Each level has a completely different goal and ways of going about it as you interact with the wonderful characters who give you these tasks. There are the Mafia members, the Conductor, DJ Grooves, and the Snatcher. Each are all wildly different, but a pleasure to talk to as they all have something different to say and bring to the table. You'll never get tired of talking to the colourful cast of characters as you continue your journey to get all your Time Pieces back. My only complaint is that the base game is a bit short for me. Four worlds is really not enough for me, but that's just me being hungry for more. In a way, it's sort of a good thing. I love the game so much, so of course I want more. Considering that there are two expansions with new levels, characters, and entirely new worlds now, this problem is entirely nullified... Sort of. Of course I would love for them to be base game, but you can't have everything. Overall, A Hat in Time is what I would like to call a masterpiece. It has a nice aesthetic, huge worlds with a lot to do, many different powers to play with, wacky and lovable characters, amazing music, and a lot of replayability. Who would've thought that a small indie company would produce such an incredible game? Hats off to the creators. Well now about the 2 dlcs... Half of it is probably one of the cutest parts of the game with the seals. The cruise levels can be short, with only 3 acts, but damn they are enjoyable. The ship is really awesome to explore and offers some quirky dialogues from past characters. Also the time rift is amazing, probably the most difficult time rift of the game, but awesome. The other half of the dlc i a living hell, and a completionists wet dream. The contracts to fullfill the death wishes are pretty challenging, and some quite irritating (cruisin for a brusing is a nightmare), but they offer replayability to the stages, a nice challenge (though you must be determined to tryhard them and suffer if you want to complete them all) and some nice hat flairs, colors and camera filters. All in all its a good dlc, a bit more centered towards being challenging rather than casual, but then again, the death wish contracts are optional in the end. If you feel like the difficulty is too high, you can either do them with the game helping you (peace & tranquility) or just skip the ones you feel you can't complete. As far as the second DLC, the fact that nyakyza metro contains so many hat flairs, colours and collectibles, as well as the modern design of the metro gives the area a cool tokyo like vibe. The platforming is still pretty cool and the visuals are amazing, its only drawback is that its only one area.
A Hat in Time is a fantastic example of a 3D platformer. Featuring a cute child with a hat, a town made by a mafia, birds competing for movie awards, a soul stealing contract dealer, and much more. The game is visually impressive and fun to play, each level has plenty to explore and more than enough goodies to pick up all the hats you can make to find new secrets or reach new objectives.
