Quick verdict

Biomutant looks best on PC, and among consoles Xbox Series X wins on resolution.

Best graphics experience PC 4K/60 on an RTX 3080 with no cutbacks
Best console experience Xbox Series X 2160p against PS5's 1080p
Best for the money PS4 Pro its 60 FPS mode holds up better than One X's

Why PC wins

It is the only version without cuts: better textures in the wide open areas, better outdoor shadows, anisotropic filtering far ahead and noticeably more draw distance. On top of that, an RTX 3080 maxed out handled 4K/60 in testing.

On console

No console got a native build: the game runs through backward compatibility. Even so, Series X reaches 2160p while PS5 stays at 1080p, and the Xbox Series machines load faster. Series S cuts the most, with weaker textures and the most visible frame rate drops.

If you play on last-gen hardware

One X is the only one that goes past 1080p, hitting 1800p in its 30 FPS mode. If you want steady 60 FPS instead, PS4 Pro behaves better than One X, which suffers frame-pacing.

The game never got a native PS5 or Xbox Series build: everything you see on current-gen consoles comes from backward compatibility.

Biomutant on PS5, Xbox Series and PC: graphics comparison

  • On consoles the game runs in backward compatibility mode: there is no native current-gen build.
  • The test PC, an RTX 3080 with every setting maxed, runs it at 4K/60 without breaking a sweat.
  • PS5 stays at 1080p, Series X runs at 2160p and Series S offers 1440p/30 or 1080p/60, apparently using temporal reconstruction.
  • All four versions let you lock the frame rate at 30 FPS, and Series S gains resolution and settings when you do.
  • Textures are worse on Series S and much better on PC in the widest areas.
  • PC leads on outdoor shadows, followed by Series X and then PS5; indoors all four versions look the same.
  • Anisotropic filtering and draw distance are clearly ahead on PC.
  • There are frame rate problems, most noticeable on Series S: the console versions need optimisation.

Biomutant on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and One X: graphics comparison

  • Xbox One and PS4 run at 1080p, and PS4 Pro also sticks to 1080p in both of its modes.
  • One X is the only one that goes higher: 1800p in 30 FPS mode and 1080p in 60 FPS mode.
  • The Xbox versions suffer frame-pacing issues, and One X's 60 FPS mode runs worse than PS4 Pro's through a plain lack of optimisation.
  • PS4 Pro and One X load faster, filter textures better and draw further into the distance.
  • Some textures are higher quality on the bigger machines, but the overall result is very similar across all four consoles.
  • Shadows look slightly better on One X, without a big advantage.

Frequently asked questions about Biomutant

Which platform does Biomutant look best on?

PC. It has the best textures in open areas, the best outdoor shadows, more draw distance and anisotropic filtering well above any console. In testing it ran at 4K/60 on an RTX 3080 with everything maxed.

Is there a native PS5 or Xbox Series version?

No. On current-gen consoles the game runs through backward compatibility. Each machine still behaves differently, though: Series X reaches 2160p while PS5 stays at 1080p.

How does it run on Xbox Series S?

It is the most cut-back version. You choose between 1440p at 30 FPS and 1080p at 60, with temporal reconstruction involved, and it has the weakest textures and the most visible frame rate drops. Its 30 FPS mode gains resolution and a few settings.

Is it worth playing on PS4 Pro or Xbox One X?

One X is the only last-gen console that goes past 1080p, reaching 1800p in its 30 FPS mode. If you would rather have 60 FPS, PS4 Pro holds them better: the Xbox versions suffer frame-pacing and One X's 60 FPS mode runs worse than expected.

What about the Nintendo Switch version?

The technical analyses we work from do not cover it, so we have no resolution or performance figures for Switch.
